In 1937 shopping carts were invented by Sylvan Goldman, owner of the Piggly Wiggly supermarket chain. Designed to simplify shopping for the consumer, these vessels of capitalism were also found to increase revenue amongst the facilities that implemented them. Today, shopping carts are an unmistakable icon of American and worldwide commerce. What Goldman did not foresee however is the fact that these shopping carts would be reappropriated by various street travelers. From recyclables to children, many sundry items have been spotted moving to and fro via shopping cart. Cart disappearances have become such a problem for establishments, specific theft prevention technology has been developed.
